theology of space

Sometimes when we are reading the Old Testament we forget the scale of things. Let’s put things into perspective.

Jerusalem had grown quite a bit by the time Jesus was walking in it. The temple Jesus visited (Herod’s temple) was around 36 acres (9 super targets). The next time you’re walking across the store for the third time and sipping your Starbucks, try and imagine dust on your feet and the sound of livestock and babies crying. (OK, maybe you don’t have to imagine the wailing kids part). Bring your American scale down and then recall a few ancient Bible stories. Has your perspective changed?

We naturally assume that our environment is a close match to the biblical ones we read about. It’s a really helpful practice to use our imagination when reading Bible stories. Our empathy grows and it naturally slows our instinct to read as if we are the intended audience. Remember the Bible was written to Israelites, not 21st century Americans. We get the privilege of a holy eavesdrop.
